Sympathy Flowers

The benefits of Sympathy Flowers

The benefits of sympathy flowers got attention recently in an article on FuneralWire.com. "Flowers are a tremendous gift," said the article's author, Kim Stacey, to E-Brief editors. "This article was from the heart."

In the article, "Avoiding Confusion," Stacey, who also has a funeral services marketing business, began by discussing the phrase "in lieu of." "This is, by its very nature, exclusionary, limiting people's sympathy choices to only one thing: the donation instead of the flowers," Stacey writes.

She goes on to discuss the value of sympathy flowers. "It is my strong opinion that flowers are a tangible means of showing concern, affection and sympathy for the bereaved," says Stacey, who trained as an anthropologist and has studied death rituals around the world. "Traditions speak," she told E-Brief editors. "Flowers have long been a part of the process of grieving, going back to ancient Egypt and even beyond."

In the article, she also cites SAF's "The Role of Flowers in the Bereavement Process" 1990 study, jointly funded by the American Floral Endowment and the Society of American Florists Information Committee, stating that "more than half of the bereaved surveyed strongly agree that flowers were a critical component of the funeral ritual that helped them deal with their grief."

America's Romantic Temperature

Survey Reports on America's Romantic Temperature

Both Men and Women Agree: Men Only Lukewarm in Romance
Though our planet may be warming, America's romantic climate registers "fizzle" not "sizzle," according to a survey conducted by the Society of American Florists (SAF). Only 19% of men rank themselves as a seven or higher on a romantic scale of one to 10. And women agree: Just 19% rate their husband, boyfriend or significant other a seven or more.
The remaining 81% of men rank their romantic temperature anywhere from mild to downright chilly, according to the survey. But these men can soon take advantage of an ideal opportunity to spark a heat wave.
Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to ignite the romance in any relationship. It's a great time for men to step outside their usual routine and explore their passionate side.
Overcoming Inertia
The survey results suggest many men would rate higher on the romance scale if they simply planned their Valentine's Day activities before the last minute. When asked how early they prepare for Valentine's Day, only a third of men said they purchase gifts or make arrangements a week or more in advance. On the other end of the spectrum, 30% wait until Valentine's Day or the day before to order or purchase gifts for their sweetheart.
Men who rank particularly low on the romance scale may want to start warming things up before Valentine's Day itself. Planning ahead is the best-kept secret of romance. It's a good idea to order flowers and make any special arrangements at least a week in advance. Send flowers or other romantic gifts to your Valentine at work. There's nothing like a special delivery at the office to make a woman feel appreciated publicly.
A Little Effort Goes a Long Way
For men, there is good news in the survey results: There are so few red hot Romeos out there that it won't take much to make yourself stand out from the competition.
With a little planning and creativity, you can really light a fire. Florists are experts in helping you create an arrangement that suits your sweetheart's desires and eloquently communicates your feelings.

Results are from a nationwide survey of 481 men and 534 women conducted April 23-26, 1998 by Bruskin/Goldring Research for the Society of American Florists.

Janurary Flower of the Month

What is delicate, durable, and delightful all in one? The carnation, botanical name: Dianthus caryophyllus, is a historically rich and meaningful flower choice. The scientific name dianthus can be translating to "flower of love" or "flower of the gods". This flower is one that has been revered for centuries. One of the world's oldest cultivated flowers, this beautiful flower is appreciated for its ruffled appearance, clove-like scent, and long vase life.

The carnation's history dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times, when it was used in art and décor. Christians believe that the first carnation bloomed on earth when Mary wept for Jesus as he carried his cross. Carnations in these early times were predominantly found in shades of pale pink and peach. Now they are available in the colors of - red, yellow, white, shades of purple, and green. The fact that the carnation continues to endure is a testament to its appeal as a flower with staying power.

The meanings of carnations vary. Like many other flowers, different messages can be expressed with the flower’s different colors. Red carnations, for example, are often used to convey admiration or love and affection. White carnations are associated with purity and luck, and pink are often given as a sign of gratitude.

In the early part of the 20th century, carnations became the official flower of Mother's Day. This year is Mother's Day's Fifith anniversary!

Parrot Flower

According man who took the photos it is Impatiens psittacina. He happens to have a botanical background and is an excellent plant grower in Thailand. The plant was identified at the Royal Botanical Garden Kew in 1901 and was discovered in 1899 in the Shaw States of Burma. It is only found in portions of Burma and northern Thailand and as such is quite rare. It is very difficult to cultivate and requires a local natural pollinator to produce seeds. It also requires very specific soil pH in order to prosper and produce the "blue" coloration. If you would like to read more about the plant, you can find information by clicking this link: Impatiens psittacina .

Brownies

We had a wonderful group of Brownies from
Pleasent Hill School join us at the flower shoppe, today.
Janice gave them a tour of the shop, two floral demonstrations, and the girls
each made their own bouquets! They did a great job and had lots of questions.
When they were told that the old house the flower shop is in was over 100 years old,
one girl asked if it was haunted!
Thanks for coming, girls...
we hope that you had as good a time as we did.
